A caulk expert shares their best gunk-hiding color picks that work with warm, cool, and multi-colored surfaces.

There are several factors to consider when selecting caulk for a home improvement project. Practically speaking, these factors include whether the area is located inside or outside the home, whether the spot gets a lot of traffic or is prone to moisture, and the materials the caulk will be applied to. There’s also a visual component to selecting caulk, because choosing the wrong color of caulk can result in a messy and distracting look that takes away from the surrounding surfaces.
With so many different types and colors of caulk available on the market, we asked Michael Garvey, merchant of construction adhesives, caulks, adhesives, and patching at The Home Depot, to provide his expert insight for choosing the right type of caulk. He shares what color of caulk to use to best hide dirt and grime, as well as the colors of caulk to use on warm-toned, cool-toned, and multi-colored surfaces.
Choose Gray or Brown Caulk to Hide Grime
“Darker caulk colors, such as gray and brown, are better at hiding grime and mold,” Garvey says. He explains that darker shades of caulk naturally mask dirt, and that makes them ideal for high-use or moisture-prone areas. “To ensure long-term cleanliness, use a mold-resistant caulk designed for durability in wet environments,” he suggests. A dark brown or gray color will provide opaque coverage to mask dirt, grime, and mold, while a silicone caulk’s waterproof and mold-resistant formula is designed to provide a reliable seal without cracking or shrinking.
Use Beige or Light Brown Caulk for Warm Tones
If you’re wondering what color of caulk you should use on warm-toned floor or wall tile, take Garvey’s advice and pair warm-toned caulk with warm-toned surfaces. “Warm-toned tiles, like beige or tan, pair well with beige or light brown caulk,” he says. What you want is for the caulk to seamlessly blend in with the tile, so that it’s the tile that stands out and not the caulk. For a discreet look, Garvey recommends using a beige high-performance silicone sealant on warm-toned tile. “It creates a seamless and cohesive appearance, enhancing the natural warmth of the tiles without drawing attention to the caulk lines,” he says.
Choose Gray Caulk for Cool Tones
“Cool-toned tiles, such as gray, blue, or green, look best with light or medium gray caulk,” Garvey says. While you don’t need green caulk to match green tile or blue caulk to blend in with blue tile, paying attention to whether your tile is warm or cool-toned, light or dark, is key for selecting a caulk color that won’t compete with and distract from the tile. “This combination keeps the look harmonious and provides subtle definition without overwhelming the overall design,” Garvey explains.
Use Clear Caulk on Glass, Natural Stone, or Multi-Colored Surfaces
When it comes to highly noticeable areas, transparent materials, or surfaces featuring multiple colors, Garvey recommends using clear caulk. This type of caulk typically goes on white and dries clear, so you don’t have to worry about any distinct caulk lines taking away from the tile design. “It’s perfect for areas where the caulk line should be less noticeable and it’s also ideal for sealing fixtures and joints where a visible color might distract from the aesthetic”, Garvey says. He recommends using clear caulk with materials like glass, natural stone, and multi-colored surfaces so you maintain the focus on the surrounding design.
